I left both behind to do my own thing because 1) I wanted to pick who I worked with and 2) I learned that I’m better at managing accounts than managing people, which was the agency trajectory I was on. @robert_brady

@robert_brady listen, that path to leadership = manage people or stay stuck is so real and such nonsense! our whole industry has failed to develop the specialist track. @JuliaVyse

This is less of an “agency” vs “in-house” mechanic, but on working for someone else vs yourself: the main benefit to working for yourself is autonomy on who you serve. There’s no holding your nose and not working on a client if you work for someone else if they already said yes to the money. A big reason I went off on my own for a while is I wanted to have more control on who I served. @navahhopkins

I’ve been my own boss for almost my entire career. Having your own practice takes the work from not only just consulting but also managing and growing a business. That said, though I look back on my time at an agency fondly, there were definitely clients I would have chosen not to work with had I been on my own lol @Susie Marino

@JuliaVyse the computer geek industry came up with the idea of the highly paid IC – individual contributor for people who didn’t want to be a manager. It also felt like it went from lull periods to all hands on deck periods during majors campaign launches. I try to hunt around for people myself and with the team. @JuliaVyse

Right, and then like what PPC talent keywords is AI prioritizing during scanning then @Susie Marino

I’ll be honest, my experience in holdco land is hiring buyers and teaching them rather than existing experts. our salaries aren’t competitive enough and our recruiters often don’t know enough about the role to be discerning. hiring sucks in the big 6 right now. or I guess big 5 since the merger @JuliaVyse

Q6: What advice would you have for anyone else in the PPC job market right now?

For instance, what types of skills do you think are important to have and showcase when going for PPC work? Regardless of whether you’re doing that work for a company or in your own practice. @Susie Marino

Curiosity is a must-have. A person who asks why things are the way they are. Then critical thinking skills. Accounts are becoming more and more one-of-a-kind, so the ability to know what principles to apply at what time and how to apply them is key. In a word: judgment. @robert_brady

Show you can understand a client’s business before you show strength in merchant center optimisation or keyword management. Show you know where a lead goes and why that’s a good conversion. Show you can make decisions based on outcomes, and put that on your resume or 1page website. @JuliaVyse

@JuliaVyse The candidates who dive into conversion- and down-funnel questions during the technical round are often the strongest candidates, like 90%+ of the time @kytaylor88

I would almost want to recommend they major in computer science or data engineering, maybe economics versus a standard BBA or Marketing Management degree. Then focus on jobs that let you cross disciplines and get experience in many areas. With the goal of becoming well-rounded, being able to speak brand strategy, data analytics, just as much as PPC or SEO digital-first language. I imagine that’d set them much better than diving deep into one specialization early. That’s different advice I would’ve given someone 10-15 years ago. AI changed the game technical skills imo @timmhalloran

@timmhalloran Yeah I totally agree. @Susie Marino

Q7: How would you describe the state of PPC jobs right now?

ROUGH! it is so bad out there right now. fake job postings, interested applicants who ghost, claude effing everything, it’s a slop trough right now. @JuliaVyse

Yeah my biggest pain point would be the spam/AI coming at us from all sides right now @Susie Marino

I have a steady stream of inbound leads because I write quite a bit. If feels pretty much the same – a couple of enquiries a week. I’ve been passing these onto friends because till recently I haven’t had the capacity to take on any new clients. @Pete_Bowen

Competitive. People are hiring less and allowing AI to take the roles generally reserved for introductory specialists. I’m seeing it at AIMCLEAR and other agencies I’ve talked to are saying the same thing @timmhalloran

My cousin just finished an advanced degree at NYU after getting experience at some large corps in between and he’s been on the job hunt for 4.5 months. Anecdotal yea, but I think it’s much more difficult than economic data shows right now. PPC or otherwise, people are *staying put. @timmhalloran

I feel like I am seeing a lot of roles though, and maybe it’s because I’m pretty flexible in what I’m looking for, but I’m applying to a lot of solid jobs, but with everyone going on, progressing through interviews has been slow, and you can definitely feel the heat of the competition at that point @Susie Marino

I am noticing a lot of very low salaries even for Senior and Manager positions – especially for anything remote. I could understand a tad under market for remote work but I’m seeing most offering 25-40% less. @williamhboggs

Yes and I fear I’ve seen a lot more RIFs etc., which is about to make the competition even more fierce, and then we have the slow down around holidays too @Susie Marino

@williamhboggs yes! and this is difficult because every company’s marketing titles mean something different, what could be senior at one agency isn’t at another @Susie Marino

PPCChat Participants

Julia Vyse @JuliaVyse

Robert Brady @robert_brady

Navah Hopkins @navahhopkins

Peter Bowen @Pete_Bowen

Susie Marino @Susie Marino

Boggs @williamhboggs

Kyle Taylor @kytaylor88

Dan Thies @DanThies

Tim Halloran @timmhalloran

Related Links

Master Google Ads Negative Keyword Lists: Types, Strategy & Best Practices

Does Your New Creative Actually Win?
