BUT to be fair, that\u2019s because we always only ever had the option to exclude\/include all apps. &#8211;\u00a0<a class=\"ProfileHeaderCard-screennameLink u-linkComplex js-nav\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PPCKirk\"><span class=\"username u-dir\" dir=\"ltr\">@PPCKirk<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I am more likely to forget ad copy than forget excluding\u00a0<a class=\"twitter-timeline-link\" dir=\"ltr\" title=\"http:\/\/adsenseformobileapps.com\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/dA25cWWSrK\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-expanded-url=\"http:\/\/adsenseformobileapps.com\"><span class=\"js-display-url\">adsenseformobileapps.com<\/span><span class=\"tco-ellipsis\"><span class=\"invisible\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/a> in GDN campaigns. &#8211;\u00a0<a class=\"ProfileHeaderCard-screennameLink u-linkComplex js-nav\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/robert_brady\"><span class=\"username u-dir\" dir=\"ltr\">@robert_brady<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Seriously thought, I have found that without using the\u00a0<a class=\"twitter-timeline-link\" dir=\"ltr\" title=\"http:\/\/adsenseformobileapps.com\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/ptYT9uTbwD\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-expanded-url=\"http:\/\/adsenseformobileapps.com\"><span class=\"js-display-url\">adsenseformobileapps.com<\/span><span class=\"tco-ellipsis\"><span class=\"invisible\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/a> exclusion, even with all the possible categories checked for exclusion, I still get a fair amount of app traffic. Unless they improve that, this sucks.\u00a0 &#8211;\u00a0<a class=\"ProfileHeaderCard-screennameLink u-linkComplex js-nav\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NeptuneMoon\"><span class=\"username u-dir\" dir=\"ltr\">@NeptuneMoon<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>yes. I actually find games\/app placements work quite well in certain cases (CERTAIN) so I like to place it as an exclusion most of the time, and isolate it in cases where it works. so much cleaner!\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0<a class=\"ProfileHeaderCard-screennameLink u-linkComplex js-nav\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JuliaVyse\"><span class=\"username u-dir\" dir=\"ltr\">@JuliaVyse<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>For sure my fave traffic are accidental clicks from chubby thumbs during an intense game of Candy Crush. &#8211;\u00a0<a class=\"ProfileHeaderCard-screennameLink u-linkComplex js-nav\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ericdfarmer\"><span class=\"username u-dir\" dir=\"ltr\">@ericdfarmer<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Q2: How large of a negative impact would you anticipate on your campaigns if no additional action was taken on your part?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>If no action was taken, no app category exclusions, same pricing, etc, I would expect traffic\/spend to surge in GDN. That\u2019s a *lot* of inventory they\u2019re opening to all. On the other hand, that also means CPCs will lower, so it\u2019s a little up in the air, TBH. &#8211;\u00a0<a class=\"ProfileHeaderCard-screennameLink u-linkComplex js-nav\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PPCKirk\"><span class=\"username u-dir\" dir=\"ltr\">@PPCKirk<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Honestly, we try to reduce mobile traffic for most campaigns anyway. So this will just further reinforce that strategy!\u00a0 &#8211;\u00a0<a class=\"ProfileHeaderCard-screennameLink u-linkComplex js-nav\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/gilgildner\"><span class=\"username u-dir\" dir=\"ltr\">@gilgildner<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Some GDN campaigns, especially audience-targeted ones will probably perform very poorly as I have only seen very high bounce rates from app placements. &#8211;\u00a0<a class=\"ProfileHeaderCard-screennameLink u-linkComplex js-nav\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ch_brauer\"><span class=\"username u-dir\" dir=\"ltr\">@ch_brauer<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Courtesy of Google Ads allowing 2X daily spend &amp; the Labor Day weekend I would have anticipated lots of wasted spend that I would spend all day Tuesday cleaning up. &#8211;\u00a0<a class=\"ProfileHeaderCard-screennameLink u-linkComplex js-nav\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/robert_brady\"><span class=\"username u-dir\" dir=\"ltr\">@robert_brady<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If NO action was taken and all placements\/devices\/exclusions remained open? I&#8217;d expect high cost, high impressions, low quality traffic, and at least one PR crisis &#8211;\u00a0<a class=\"ProfileHeaderCard-screennameLink u-linkComplex js-nav\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/amaliaefowler\"><span class=\"username u-dir\" dir=\"ltr\">@amaliaefowler<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Hard to say the impact if I were to do nothing. I have apps excluded primarily at the settings level rn, but have also opted out of all gaming-related content categories so the campaigns may not be hit that hard. &#8211;\u00a0<a class=\"ProfileHeaderCard-screennameLink u-linkComplex js-nav\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/akaEmmaLouise\"><span class=\"username u-dir\" dir=\"ltr\">@akaEmmaLouise<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Can we be totally honest here for a hot second? A LOT of the inventory on GDN is terrible (non-app variety). Making us accept app traffic just to reach people on mobile devices is straight up awful. &#8211;\u00a0<a class=\"ProfileHeaderCard-screennameLink u-linkComplex js-nav\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NeptuneMoon\"><span class=\"username u-dir\" dir=\"ltr\">@NeptuneMoon<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I expect a pretty large one! I like GDN for inception&#8230;I mean, awareness-building&#8230;anyway, I use the GDN. and if their traffic starts getting ridiculous, I will have to turn to third party programmatic. Not. A. Fan.\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0<a class=\"ProfileHeaderCard-screennameLink u-linkComplex js-nav\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JuliaVyse\"><span class=\"username u-dir\" dir=\"ltr\">@JuliaVyse<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If you are not saying a large difference then you are not checking placements in your display campaigns. They should be showing case study of results.\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0<a class=\"ProfileHeaderCard-screennameLink u-linkComplex js-nav\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elevatedmrktng\"><span class=\"username u-dir\" dir=\"ltr\">@elevatedmrktng<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>From a budget management standpoint, huge, from a performance impact, huger\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0<a class=\"ProfileHeaderCard-screennameLink u-linkComplex js-nav\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JonKagan\"><span class=\"username u-dir\" dir=\"ltr\">@JonKagan<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Q3: How will you be handling it\/making changes? Provide your logic because I think there are numerous potential solutions\/workarounds.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We will be analyzing mobile\/tablet GDN campaigns. (1) If success, we will implement some app categories (excluding heavily for things like games) and keep a close eye on. (2) if they already don\u2019t perform very well, we\u2019ll just exclude mobile\/tablets entirely. &#8211;\u00a0<a class=\"ProfileHeaderCard-screennameLink u-linkComplex js-nav\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PPCKirk\"><span class=\"username u-dir\" dir=\"ltr\">@PPCKirk<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>For the majority of campaigns, blocking mobile placements entirely is going to the be answer. For a few specific niches, we&#8217;ll do our best to make it work, but my solution is just to stop mobile GDN placement for now.\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0<a class=\"ProfileHeaderCard-screennameLink u-linkComplex js-nav\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/gilgildner\"><span class=\"username u-dir\" dir=\"ltr\">@gilgildner<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I will probably split my campaigns up by device (while excluding other devices) to test the app category exclusions. It the placements\/ results don&#8217;t hack it = Easier to cut the cord on mobile traffic. &#8211;\u00a0<a class=\"ProfileHeaderCard-screennameLink u-linkComplex js-nav\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mackay0\"><span class=\"username u-dir\" dir=\"ltr\">@mackay0<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>More budget to Bing \ud83d\ude42 Bing has been working great for us &#8211;\u00a0<a class=\"ProfileHeaderCard-screennameLink u-linkComplex js-nav\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/brandon_bednar\"><span class=\"username u-dir\" dir=\"ltr\">@brandon_bednar<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re just shutting off mobile. We can&#8217;t afford the crappy traffic. &#8211;\u00a0<a class=\"ProfileHeaderCard-screennameLink u-linkComplex js-nav\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Mel66\"><span class=\"username u-dir\" dir=\"ltr\">@Mel66<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>More frequent and careful placement reviews, app category exclusions (although I&#8217;m skeptical that these will be a catch-all solution)\u00a0 &#8211;\u00a0<a class=\"ProfileHeaderCard-screennameLink u-linkComplex js-nav\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/timothyjjensen\"><span class=\"username u-dir\" dir=\"ltr\">@timothyjjensen<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Catching up &#8211; Seriously considering pausing all unknown demographics (especially age) That&#8217;s where the kid clicks are at in apps. But, I&#8217;m going to let the data flow in to make that decision. &#8211;\u00a0<a class=\"ProfileHeaderCard-screennameLink u-linkComplex js-nav\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jstatad\"><span class=\"username u-dir\" dir=\"ltr\">@jstatad<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I will be doing my best to exclude apps other ways, if it doesn&#8217;t work, in most cases I will be eliminating mobile GDN placements for most of my clients across the board, and at the very least removing phone call extensions. &#8211;\u00a0<a class=\"ProfileHeaderCard-screennameLink u-linkComplex js-nav\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/amaliaefowler\"><span class=\"username u-dir\" dir=\"ltr\">@amaliaefowler<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve warned all my clients about the change and let them know we will be using workarounds as needed to keep quality of mobile traffic up vs. focusing only on desktop or avoiding GDN. Also warned them about how it may impact competition and CPCs.\u00a0Workarounds are the obvious content and topic exclusions that Google&#8217;s told us about. We&#8217;re also digging up some super old scripts that may be implemented to automatically exclude app placements as they show up. Personally, I plan to hold off on that initially.\u00a0 Unpopular opinion but I&#8217;m not convinced <a class=\"twitter-atreply pretty-link js-nav\" dir=\"ltr\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GoogleAds\" data-mentioned-user-id=\"91220126\">@GoogleAds<\/a> is wrong here. It hurts, but we <a class=\"twitter-hashtag pretty-link js-nav\" dir=\"ltr\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/ppcchat?src=hash\" data-query-source=\"hashtag_click\"><s>#<\/s>ppcchat<\/a> folks can be reluctant to accept change if given the option to avoid it. Apps may not in fact be worse than other GDN placements &amp; exclusions inhibit machine-learning optimization. &#8211;\u00a0<a class=\"ProfileHeaderCard-screennameLink u-linkComplex js-nav\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/akaEmmaLouise\"><span class=\"username u-dir\" dir=\"ltr\">@akaEmmaLouise<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I am going to be very carefully tracking the time involved in dealing with this, because I can see this becoming a time suck &#8211; looking at placement reports already is now. Will see about diminishing returns &amp; advise accordingly. &#8211;\u00a0<a class=\"ProfileHeaderCard-screennameLink u-linkComplex js-nav\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NeptuneMoon\"><span class=\"username u-dir\" dir=\"ltr\">@NeptuneMoon<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Dive into the historical data and really narrow down on what has worked over and over again. Focus on that and only that!\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0<a class=\"ProfileHeaderCard-screennameLink u-linkComplex js-nav\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/markpgus\"><span class=\"username u-dir\" dir=\"ltr\">@markpgus<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Like a lot of people said, definitely their audiences and granularity. We will now use app category exclusion to accomplish this. We check the apps for placements and look for good apps and filter those out into their own camapign to control cost.\u00a0For anyone hating on GDN you should be using to build email list!
